The Cleggan & Claddaghduff area has featured in numerous TV shows including the BBC2 series 'Coast' as an idyllic place to live or visit
The Cleggan/Claddaghduff area is renowned for its wide array of beautiful beaches. Here is the list of beaches:
CLEGGAN-STRAND:
Cleggan Beach is located at the head of Cleggan Bay. It is on the seaward side of the "Cleggan Causeway" - a narrow spit of land traversed by the road connecting Cleggan and the Aughrus Peninsula to Cleggan Head
SELLER
Sellerna is a large, expanse of beach near Cleggan, accessed by a small road on the right as you leave Cleggan towards the end of the peninsula. You'll find it signposted "Tra" (meaning "beach" or "beach" in Irish) right next to a large white "Cleggan" sign marking the outskirts of the village. This is a beautiful, safe, sandy beach that is particularly popular with families. Nice to take an evening walk at sunset.
TRA BRHRIDE, ROSSADYLISK
From Cleggan Village of Cleggan, go to the tip of the peninsula and turn right towards Rossadilisk, about 2km from Cleggan. Turn left from Claddaghduff 50 yards from Sweeney's over the hill, turn right at the crossroads and the left turn into Rossadilisk is just a few hundred yards up the road towards Cleggan. Take the narrow road to Rossadilisk and take the first right onto a dirt road which will take you to the very pretty Tra Bhride in Cleggan Bay. It is a smaller beach than Sellerna but really beautiful as you can see in the picture above. Anglers sometimes fish from the rocks at either end of the beach.
ROSSADYLISK-STRANG:
Rossadilisk Beach proper is a wide, expanse of beach that stretches around Rossadilisk Point and is protected by reefs from offshore rocks. Around the point is the port of Rossadilisk with a pier and, except in winter, small fishing vessels, including traditional curries, moor there. At high tide there is a small strip of sand, but at low tide the sea retreats quite far from the flat beach.
The sea here is often warm, especially at high tide when the sea floods the sun-warmed sand. It's great for swimming - and extremely safe - and for a leisurely stroll on a summer evening. It's a romantic place
ANCHOR BEACH AND OTHER BAYS IN AUGHRUSBEG:
The Anchor Beach at Aughrus Beg on the shores of Lake Aughrus is a beautiful place whether it be a windy day, as pictured to the right, or a nice, calm day - a photo of the banner appears at the top of every page on this website to see anchor beach. There are actually many small beaches connected to each other, all sandy and beautiful, perfect for families to spend the day swimming, playing or just soaking up the sun.
TRA MOR
Tra Mor (big beach) is also on the shores of Lake Aughrus. There are a number of fairly newly built houses along the secondary road leading to what is known locally as Gannoughs and to Aughrus Point itself; and next to it a bumpy path that leads to a grassy area. If you go straight along the meadow, you will reach Tra Mor.
Again, this is a great beach for families - a bit off the beaten track so not many people know about it other than the locals and reading these pages. It's sandy, with rocky outcrops - perfect for swimming and sunbathing, and the best beach we can imagine for enjoying the endlessly enjoyable task of gazing at the rock pools with their wide variety of coastal life. The perfect activity for kids ages eight to eighty!
OMEY STRAND
It is a tidal island near Claddaghduff on the western tip of Connemara. From the mainland, the island is unimpressive and almost hidden. The island can be reached by car or on foot via the large sandy beach and follow the arrow signs. At high tide, the water is deep enough to cover your car. Great for walking, swimming, sailing, surfing, kite surfing, kite flying, low tide practice... everything!
BRUNNENHÜGEL:
Fountain Hill, rounds the peninsula towards Streamstown Bay, but before the road turns left past Streamstown, it can be reached by turning right off the road. A very nice beach, sloping quite steeply but otherwise generally safe, the sand is more silver than gold and a perfect spot for a picnic.
